Gilbert A. Hill, 86, firefighter, inspector, first-aider in Verona

Gilbert A. Hill, 86, of Verona died yesterday in the New Jersey Firemans Home in Boonton.

A service will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Ave., Verona.

Mr. Hill was employed with the Essex County Roads and Bridges Department in Orange for 44 years before retiring in 1982 as a supervisor and foreman.

After that, he was a crossing guard in Verona at the corner of Bloomfield and Lakeside avenues for 20 years.

Mr. Hill was a volunteer firefighter with Company 1 of the Verona Fire Department for many years, and served as fire chief from 1971 to 1972.

He was a fire inspector for the borough of Verona from 1982 to 2000.

Mr. Hill was a member of the New Jersey Exempt Firemans Association, the New Jersey Fire Chiefs Association and the New Jersey State Firemans Association.

Mr. Hill was a life member and captain of the Verona Rescue Squad and chaplain for the Sixth District of the New Jersey State First Aid Council.

A sergeant in the Army during World War II, he served in the Pacific Theatre.

Born in Caldwell, he moved to Verona in 1950.

Surviving are a son, David Sr.; a daughter, Judith; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
